As the years went by, Reg and Pat's family grew and so did their business. They became agents for Yamaha, began importing new pianos from China and South Korea and also became one of the first dealers to offer pianos for rent.
Renting proved to be a popular option and at times, Hutchings Pianos has had as many as 500 pianos rented around Sydney. Since then, the business has also built strong relationships with Sydney's music and entertainment community and is a regular sponsor of the performing arts.
The shop is centrally located at one of the main traffic gateways to Sydney's eastern suburbs, the Bondi/Woollahra intersection. Hutchings Pianos today, located alongside Hutchings Keyboards, ( owned by Reg's son, Greg Hutchings) is a landmark, known for its distinctive wall mural which features portraits of some of 20th century music's finest pianists.
When Reg's health began to fail in 1996, he decided to restructure the company, handing the management and ownership over to his children, who had all grown up in the business. Reg's children, Wendy, Greg, Rodney and Amanda took up positions at Board level. Wendy is also Manager and her daughter, Jody is Finance Manager.
Reg was able to maintain his keen interest in the business and share his experience and extensive knowledge of piano products, technical expertise and business acumen, until his death in August 2000, at the age of 83. Pat Hutchings is delighted that her children have continued on with the enterprise that she and Reg began all those years ago.
Hutchings Pianos has since become one of the most enduring and well-known piano retailers in Sydney with a commitment to quality, service and experience.
The sales team at Hutchings are committed to a high standard of customer service, giving friendly and helpful advice on a multitude of subjects. Having a musical background, several at performance level, gives them a special understanding of customer needs and first hand knowledge of the importance of a good instrument.
